One of the steps we take when helping a client release a new product, launching an app, or any type of marketing service, really, is knowing the competition. We’re not talking about just knowing who they are, we mean knowing the ins and outs of their product, campaign, etc. Here’s why:
A lot of business owners out there don’t take the initiative to know their own product, let alone someone else’s. But knowing who else is out there either in your area or field is important. These competitors could be taking business from you and you don’t even know it. Knowing the ins and outs of what they do and how they do it is just as important as knowing your own brand. A simple Google Search can get you a large part of the way there.
This seems like a no brainer, but part of knowing your competition is knowing the differences between them and you. From their website to social media to the product and customer service, etc. Do they have a similar logo? Do they show up higher in a search? What’s their latest press release about? How are the reviews? The list goes on.
Now you have your list of competitors and all of the information you can dig up on them from public domain. The next step, which will require openness and honesty on your part, is going through all the information and comparing your own product and brand to theirs. Are there areas where you could improve? Are there areas that you just knock it out of the park? Both are things you should look at and work on. Grow your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses. This is all part of the learning process and expanding you and your business.
